Position Overview

This position is responsible for monitoring the end to end workflow of proper shipment execution. Our supervisors work to oversee driver/carrier assignment, optimization of load plans, proper scheduling of truck departure and delivery times, and continued compliance with DOT and OSHA regulations. These individuals will support the manufacturing, scheduling, logistics, and transportation operational teams in primarily servicing both the Bob Evans Farms retail and Michael Foods commercial volumes.

Accountabilities

  • Carries supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws. Tasks can include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.
  • You will hold a seat on the company Safety Team and the Safety and Risk Management Process Element Team at Bob Evans.
  • Bob Evans Transportation values safety in the workplace and holds all Managers, Supervisors, and Leads responsible for a safe and healthy work environment. Supervisors will perform weekly safety scans of the terminal. All employees are responsible for the maintenance of the department’s employee safety program, ensuring all tasks pertaining to the operation are performed in an environment compliant with all applicable OSHA, DOT, and EPA requirements.
  • Collaborates with the Fleet Manager, Operations Manager, and Planning Analysts to determine driver assignments for all fleet managed shipments (inbound, outbound, and backhaul). Operates with an advanced knowledge of the Oracle Transportation Management module.
  • Updates reports related to driver/equipment availability, broker usage, on time deliveries, backhauls, open orders, etc. Identifies possible reporting gaps and works with business analysts to create new reports to track key metrics.
  • Supports our drivers by serving as a subject matter expert with our electronic log and comcheck platforms.
  • Assists in ensuring carrier coverage for our outsourced freight. Resolves problems surrounding late arrivals/deliveries, OS&D (over, short, and damaged) product claims, shipment recovery, etc.
  • Prepares accident reports (as needed).
  • Provides guidance for drivers in breakdown scenarios. Works with onsite maintenance shop and external vendors to ensure equipment is safe and fully functional.
  • Identify areas of improvement and implements LEAN processes throughout the transportation department. Manage cross-functional initiatives across sales, finance, and logistics with a continual focus on cost-savings while providing exceptional customer service.
  • Enforces city and state policies, rules, and regulations pertaining to the transportation program. Stays abreast of Federal, State, and Municipal laws and regulations, collective bargaining agreements, and company work rules pertaining to operations of commercial vehicles.

Education/Experience

  • Associate’s degree preferred in Transportation, Logistics, or related field; or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Minimum of 2 years supervisory experience
  • Prior work history with an integrated TMS preferred (ideally Oracle Transportation Management or BluJay)
  • First-hand familiarity with federal, state, and local guidelines, regulations, and programs relating to the operation of commercial vehicles
  • Experience with shipping refrigerated perishable goods strongly preferred
