The Role…

This is a technical expert R&D position; this position will coordinate assigned aspects of R&D lab and/or pilot plant operation to support product development for assigned projects. This position will demonstrate joint accountability (with R&D product development managers) for project success by assembling, evaluating, maintaining, and optimization of prototypes and pilot runs and capturing relevant formulation, such as sequence addition of ingredients and processing parameters. Prototype and bench samples production/storage/shipping, raw ingredients/samples inventory management and documentation management will be in scope for this position. This position manages aspects of food safety plan and schedules requested activities with proper equipment allocation for R&D lab and pilot plant facilities. Attending co-man bench and pilot or plant trials to ensure success of development projects could be in scope for this position. This position works with limited supervision.

Lab and/or pilot plant activities: 70% of Time

  • Coordination of bench top and pilot line activities to support various product development projects/initiatives: from ordering/weighing ingredients to production/evaluation/optimization of prototypes to packaging and labeling prototypes samples.
  • Set up, calibrate, maintain and troubleshoot lab/pilot line equipment.
  • Establish and maintain inventory management system for all pilot plant parts and supplies: raw and trial ingredients, packaging supplies and finished products (bench top and relevant commercial samples) by maintaining of agreed upon stock levels through re-ordering samples and adherence to shelf life (working closely with R&D team to achieve these duties).
  • Validate and execute food safety plan for pilot plant operation.
  • Execute master sanitation schedule for pilot plant facility.
  • Ship and receive samples to/from various sites and personnel via appropriate carriers.
  • Maintain housekeeping and organization of lab and/or pilot line areas.
  • R&D Documentation: 25% of Time

  • Lab and/or pilot line documentation: ingredient/sample records, inventory records, formulation and processing notes, cleaning records, shipping records, lab notebooks.
  • R&D Department Support: 5% of Time

  • Provide insight/recommendations into processing parameters for equipment and safety requirements.
  • Support other R&D team members with running equipment and/or product development activities as needed.
  • What are we looking for?

    Education:

  • BS Food Science, Food Engineering, Chemical Engineering or similar disciplines.
  • Experience:

  • 2+ years’ experience in Food industry, with significant hands-on experience in bench top/pilot line sample production.
  • Experience working collaborative in team environment is required.
  • Skills:

  • Demonstrated bench top/product development skills with successful record keeping and adhering to deadlines.
  • Ability to excel in dynamic fast paced business environment, demonstrated ability to self-motivate and manage multiple priorities/requests.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effective in team environment through excellent interpersonal, influencing and communication skills (both written and verbal).
  • Ability to travel to various sites as assigned.
