Safety Manager




This position has the responsibility to comply with Safety work rules at all times as well as an obligation to reinforce Safety as a Core Value. Ensures that all policies, procedures and activities, related to Food Safety & Quality, are followed and complied with uniformly, in an effort to reduce product and process variability. Ensures regulatory Compliance.

Working closely with the management team, this position also ensures that all workers in the plant are not only following regulation and guidelines, but are working in a safe work environment. It is the incumbent’s responsibility to make sure all regulations are intact and compliance is maintained at all times.


  1. Full responsibility and oversight of the Safety and Risk Management process at the site level.
  2. Assumes personal responsibility to insure safe and healthy workplace for everyone. Adhere to all safety policies and procedures and, incorporate safety and health in all jobs and tasks. Insures regulatory compliance.
  3. Provides safety training guidelines for company operations by reviewing current OSHA regulations and designing effective training programs to meet compliance requirements.
  4. Organizes and schedules training sessions and provides on-site safety training for employees.
  5. Performs on-site inspections to ensure compliance with OSHA and coordinates IH services such as noise levels, equipment and air quality, etc.
  6. Evaluates and provides guidelines on safety equipment and supplies according to ANSI standard.
  7. Maintains high level of safety awareness and insures consistency of safety program implementation by providing up-to-date information on all related safety matters to the management team and continuously working with supervisors and managers to effectively handle safety-related issues.
  8. Schedules meetings and organizes events to provide information regarding workplace safety issues to employees and managerial personnel.
  9. Supports the work of all plant Safety teams by providing training and resources.
  10. Ensures compliance with OSHA standards by keeping up-to-date with safety regulations and reviewing accident investigation reports and evaluating current procedures for improvement of safety projects.
  11. Applies current laws and regulations in the inspection of company safety protocols.
  12. Minimizes worker’s compensation cost by supervising the case files of work-related injuries.
  13. Formulates and implements follow up procedures for improvement of safety protocols.
  14. Monitors active WC files and insures best possible resolution of the WC claims.
  15. Maintains training records and safety reports.
  16. Participates in meetings with safety committees to recommend corrective actions to management regarding workplace safety procedures, perform facility audits, and discuss future safety projects.
  17. Prepares meeting agendas and minutes for distribution to appropriate sources.
  18. Maintains departmental budget by monitoring departmental expenditures.
  19. Supports local and corporate teams as it relates to training and development.
  20. Ensures compliance with PSM and Risk Management Plan (RMP) and all local, state, and federal regulations.
  21. Reviews system-altering processes prior to implementation.
  22. Organizes and provides PSM-mandated training to all applicable associates and contractors.
  23. Reviews and assists with Management of Change (MOC), Pre-Startup Safety Reviews (PSSRs), and Process Hazards Analysis (PHA).
  24. Reviews all refrigeration action plans for ammonia-related projects to ensure compliance and viability with the PSM program.
  25. Organizes and provides leadership concerning all 14 elements of PSM by reading and reviewing mechanical and electrical drawings, procedures, and ammonia-related programs and policies.
  26. Serves as primary respondent in the event of any PSM audit activity.
  27. Actively participates in refrigeration team activities and programs, and works to improve skills by staying abreast of current technologies.
  28. Schedules refrigeration associates for PSM training and Confined Space, HAZMAT, and Hot Work training programs.
  29. Adhere to safe work practices, follow GMP’s, maintain sanitary conditions and ensure that product quality is maintained. Report to management any conditions or practices that may adversely affect food safety, food quality or personnel safety.
  30. Adhere to all safety policies and procedures.
  31. Perform other duties as assigned.



Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education, training and/or experience.


Examples of licenses, certificates, and registrations required:

* Driver’s license

* OSHA 10/30hr Training (or equivalent)


Specific skills and abilities required that are not included in other sections:

  1. Minimum of five to seven years of EHS experience.
  2. Knowledge of local, state and federal safety compliance and regulatory issues, including the Occupational Safety and Health Act.
  3. Knowledge of principles and procedures and standards of accounting and budget management.
  4. Knowledge of human resources practices such as training, delegation and discipline.
  5. Knowledge of case management procedures and issues relating to workmen’s compensation and other workplace safety issues.
  6. Ability to multi-task, deal with employees with diverse background and good problem solving skills.
  7. Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  8. Ability to use Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Access.
  9. Use of ADP/Ceridian payroll system.
  10. Customer service capabilities.
  11. Basic computer skills.
  12. Basic math skills.
  13. Light typing skills.
  14. Ability to work indoors in plant/office settings for duration of shift.
  15. Ability to answer phones and receive pertinent information.
  16. Experience with PSM-associated ammonia refrigeration.
  17. Refrigeration Engineers Technician Association (RETA) certification.
  18. OSHA certification.
  19. Working knowledge of Microsoft Outlook, Word, and Excel.
  20. Ability to withstand walking, lifting, bending, stooping, climbing ladders, walking on roofs, and working in confined spaces.
  21. Ability to work in various weather conditions.
  22. Ability to lift over 50 pounds.
  23. Ability to read and understand mechanical and electrical drawings and technical specifications.
  24. Ability to read and understand complex regulatory requirements.
  25. Ability to conform to all OSHA, PSM, HAZMAT, and Publix safety program regulations.
  26. Ability to learn and understand OSHA Emergency Response requirements.
  27. Ability to demonstrate excellent work habits in line with good manufacturing practices (GMPs).
  28. Ability to demonstrate safe work habits.
  29. Ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
  30. Ability to work any shift, including nights, weekends, holidays, and extended hours.
  31. Ability to work efficiently with little to no supervision.
  32. Ability to read, write, and perform basic math.
  33. Ability to use hand and power tools.
  34. Ability to communicate effectively.
  35. Ability to follow detailed oral and written instructions.
  36. Ability to work well with others as an effective team player.
